Topic: Essay #3 is a literary analysis research essay. The student must choose a topic

focusing on the readings from this semester.

Source(s): The student must choose two texts from the required class readings (“Operation

Daniel”, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the film, Minority Report.)

There should be at least five sources on the topic to support the analysis represented in

the final paper. Two of the sources will be two of the literary works from class, OR one

literary work and the film; the other three sources you must find to help support your

claims regarding the dystopian traits and how they are used in the books and/or the film.

Length: The length of Essay #3 should be 5-8 pages

Format: MLA format is required for Essay #3

Due Dates: Submission to Peer Review Workshop: Wednesday, December 9

Assess/Review: Thursday, December 10

Final Draft: Wednesday, December 16

• The theme for the whole course:

o Everyone must define the concept of dystopias. You can’t write a paper about dystopian societies without first defining the concept.

• Dystopian Issues/Traits o Examine how the authors’ visions of future societies represent dystopias, and how

the authors featured at least two of the following issues/traits in their work:

? Censorship ? Education ? Technology ? Mass Media ? Propaganda

• Focus for the essay:

o Include in your analysis how effective the novels, short story, and/or film are in their use of the dystopian concepts and how effectively you think the authors use

their visions of a dystopian future to comment on our society (the society they lived

in at the time of publication).
