Me: An area of difficulty encountered during the creation of community awareness that obese people have more health problems is low health literacy levels. Obesity is rife in communities, but the level of information about the condition is scanty. People are filled with myths about the management of obesity and fads about diet and lifestyle modification (Kim, Oh, & Shin, 2020). It was a challenge because people were unwilling to correct their perceptions and believed what they knew as truth. As such, the community did not understand the urgency of identifying the problems obese people have and how it affects their health. Another area of difficulty encountered was to disseminate the information to the community appropriately. A community is made up of different age groups of people, ethnicities, and social classes. Hence, formulating a health literacy plan catered to everyone was a challenge, as each cohort has different learning needs.

The two new nursing interventions learned at the clinical site are implementing an obesity education program and offering support to obese people for weight management. The implementation of an education program was geared toward changing the behavior of the community. The clinical site had insufficient information about obesity, which led to poor health choices for eradicating obesity. Hence, the education program will correct the myths and unfound the food fads existing in the community (Feroz, Jabeen, & Saleem, 2020). The second intervention offers support for obese people to help them lose weight and modify lifestyle choices. A support program involves providing resources such as activity centers and support groups to help obese people understand that they have more problems and need to change their lifestyle. Nurses will be integral in facilitating the change process through the provision of evidence-based measures.

Profesor question: Hi Greter, it is interesting that some people do not want to believe experts on health-related concerns of obesity. Perhaps that’s because they don’t want to change their lifestyle. As a PHN, we must focus on the important point regarding access to healthcare for the underserved population. Decreasing disparity is so important to ensure we meet the needs of our underserved populations. These are such complex issues with no easy answers. Effective communication & ensuring the health literacy of our patients is everyone’s responsibility, especially for those of us in home health or serving the homeless, where our patients may not have immediate access to health resources.

See what the CDC says about health literacy & the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy. They have some interesting information. Please let me know your thoughts….

My difficulty this week, is similar to some of my other weeks, in which it was difficult to contact the patients in which were my assignment. I find it super difficulty with my patients to assess their needs when they do not answer the call. have some understanding that I leave the scripted voice mail along with the contact information in which to reach someone in which to address any concerns they could have. I did learn this week that sometimes the best intervention is just to be there, for the patient in listening, when they have declined for any other needs but simply want to converse and talk with me, and allow them to express themselves.

There has been some studies done on, that overlooks the verbal and noneverbal communication with patients and family members. The importance of being aware of this can greatly influence the response from your patient and the patients family, being consistent with the communication and of the verbal and none verbal communication with all the family as well as the patient would be better practice A more recent study, that examined patient relationships with General Practitioners suggested nonverbal communication is especially important in the medical profession. “Nonverbal communication is an important factor by which patients spontaneously describe and evaluate their interactions with a GP. Family GPs should be trained to better understand and monitor their own nonverbal behaviors towards patients.” (“3 tips for communicating with patients’ families,” 2018)
