Issue Brief(s)
Purpose
To provide the student an opportunity to produce a succinct and compelling issue/policy
brief that describes a policy or practice problem that also proposes specific
recommendations. The issue brief should be an objective brief with an identified group of
stakeholders.
Directions
1. Create an issue brief that is NO MORE than 2, single-spaced pages (excluding
cover and reference pages)
2. Title page inclusive of the following:
An executive summary under 150 words
Identification of key stakeholders/ target audience
Author name with credentials and pertinent affiliations

3. Issue brief (body of paper) inclusive of the following:
Problem statement
Background
Aim of the issue brief
Pre-existing policies or current practices
Policy options or evidence-based practice recommendations
Advantages and disadvantages of proposed solutions
Recommendation with a literature supported rationale
Annotated bibliography
Grading
1. A descriptive, compelling title is provided for a relevant issue to APRNs
(1 point)
2. The issue brief includes all above named components
(2 points)
3. The issue brief contains a concise, accurate, logically organized
description and analysis of the problem
(3 points)
4. The issue brief includes evidence-based recommendations that are appropriate for
targeted audience and are properly cited
(3 points)
5. The issue brief complies with APA guidelines
(1 point)
