Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is also known as respiratory rehabilitation. Pulmonary
rehabilitation is an activity formulated for people with prolonged breathing complications such
as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The activity encompasses training in body
exercises, breathing techniques, and diet education that helps patients get a better life quality and
being able to control their symptoms. Pulmonary rehabilitation enables people to attain and
maintain a high level of body functioning and independence. Even though the main focus is on
the patient, the family also gets involved. Pulmonary rehabilitation setting varies with patients. It
can be in a physician’s office, inpatient, or out-patient care. This paper will discuss the
importance and benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation and people who need it.
Importance of Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The following are the importance of Pulmonary Rehabilitation;
Disease education- Pulmonary rehabilitation is essential in that it provides disease
education to the patient and also the family. Through this program, the patient gets to understand
well about their specific lung problems. It allows one to learn about the available treatments for
their conditions or any therapies as well. Learning of new breathing strategies is another
importance of pulmonary rehabilitation. It teaches about the various breathing exercises and
strategies that one should apply when they have difficulties in breathing (Avila & M, 2017).
Diet advice- Pulmonary rehabilitation also provides diet advice to people with lung
diseases. The patient can know the various diets with different nutritional values that they can
use to help manage the multiple complications that they may have. The diets may vary from one
complication to another.

Exercise- Physical body exercise, which is part of the pulmonary rehabilitation program
helps with strengthening the muscles and health generally. This program helps the patients not to
feel tired, get stronger and can get enough sleep.
Offer support and friendship- Pulmonary rehabilitation also offer friendship and support.
This is because most of these sessions are group sessions, and therefore people with lung
diseases meet and socially interact. They share their experiences about their conditions and thus
providing support and consolation to each other. From these experiences, the patients can
develop a friendship with group mates (Avila & M, 2017).
Improving the quality of life- This is another importance of pulmonary rehabilitation.
Through physical exercise and a good diet, patients tend to get even stronger, and they can get
back to their normal activities and become more independent (Avila & M, 2017).
Benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The following are the benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation;
It reduces the length of hospital stays- It helps patients reduce their stay at hospitals.
Through this program, people with lung diseases can follow instructions and practice various
measures that help to manage the conditions. This program helps them manage their breathing
and functionality without aid provided in health centers (Leatherman et al., 2018).
Reduce the feeling of air hunger- Pulmonary rehabilitation helps in reducing the feeling
of air hunger through movement. This is attained through exercises incorporated in the program.
It also attained because the program provides patients with different breathing strategies that help
to facilitate their breathing (Yohannes et al., 2017).

Reduce the severity of symptoms- Pulmonary rehabilitation programs help patients with
lung disease to reduce the severity and manage symptoms that are related to diseases such as
difficulties in breathing and fatigue. Through the breathing strategies and exercises that this
program offers, it’s able to help patients reduce the symptoms and suffer less (Leatherman et al.,
2018).
People that Require Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is an effective program that is needed and recommended to
people who have chronic respiratory complications such as COPD, which includes chronic
bronchitis and emphysema. People suffering from interstitial lung problems such as pulmonary
fibrosis and sarcoidosis may also require this program. Patients requiring lung surgery can also
have a pulmonary rehabilitation program before undergoing surgery. Besides, people with
muscle-wasting disorders affecting the muscle used for breathing like muscular dystrophy also
need pulmonary rehabilitation (Rochester & L, 2019).
Conclusion
The enrollment of patients with lung diseases such as COPD in pulmonary rehabilitation
programs helps consistently in controlling their illness and conditions and a further step to
international standards outlined for the treatment and management of chronic lung diseases.
Pulmonary rehabilitation has been used to help people with lung diseases, and it has succeeded in
most cases. It’s an approved program with several benefits.

Exercise is individualized based on the
patient’s baseline ability, heart rate, and
oxygen saturation. Oxygen is provided, if
needed, to keep SaO2 within the
parameters requested by the referring
physician. A target heart rate is set, as
well, by an exercise physiologist.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a series of
two or three weekly sessions lasting
several weeks or months. At the end of
your program, your healthcare team will
give you tests to assess your lung
function again to see if your breathing
has improved. Some of these tests, such
as exercise tests, will be the same ones
you had at the start of your program.
