HCS 446 University of Phoenix Facility Planning Floor Plan Paper

HCS 446 University of Phoenix Facility Planning Floor Plan Paper

HCS446v11d Facility Planning Guide
Health care facilities have uniquely defined characteristics based on the needs of the facility or population served. Poor design may lead to staff, visitor, or patient stress. In large facilities, the inability to find a department may lead to frustrations and disorientation. Poor layout may also lead to staff inefficiencies or fines because of failure to meet regulatory requirements.
Throughout this course you will design a floor plan for the facility you selected in the Week 2 Facility Selection and Research assignment. This assignment illustrates the difficult balances between patient flow, workflow, safety, and aesthetics. You will use this document as a guide to understand the environmental design elements you should include in your final design. This document describes your
assignment for each week.
The emphasis of this series of assignments is on facts, concepts, requirements, planning, and so forth as
outlined in the course and program objectives. Except for week three, the vast majority of points will be
based on written components of the assignment. Even in week four, only a small portion of the points are
allocated to the physical drawing.
For the physical drawing, you may use the program of your choice to complete the floor plan. Some
programs to consider are Microsoft® Excel®, PowerPoint®, Visio®, Publisher®, or online floor plan
programs such as Floorsketcher, Draw.io, and Edraw. Lucidchart or Smartdraw will not be approved
because of new limitations on their free trial offer. It is up to you to confirm that any free trial period will
carry you through the end of class. Your faculty member will need to approve your choice, since he or she
must be able to view your project in order to grade it. It is important to note that the purpose of this project
is not to be an expert at creating a facility using your chosen program, but rather to ensure the concepts
learned in this course can be applied to the facility design principles. Your use of the floor planning
program is meant to enhance your learning of the course and program concepts.
Week Two: Facility Selection and Research
Select a facility from below to use in your final project. You will use this facility in Weeks 3 through 5. If
you would like to use a facility not listed here, please check with your instructor for approval.

• Identify key structural characteristics of the facility
• Use and cite Hayward and at least one other credible scholarly reference, using proper APA

• Submit your assignment as an APA paper, Power Point, or other format of your choice.
Week Three: Facility Planning—Floor Plan, Part 1
The construction of evidence-based health care facilities includes careful planning and layout as well as
considerations for the health of the population to be served. Evidence-based health care facilities
planning also needs input from a cross-functional team of informed stakeholders and the integration of
best practices in modern design and regulatory requirements.
This week and next, you will focus on your facility’s structure and the areas contained within it. In week
five, you will add assets to your facility.
Create a floorplan that includes at least 3 to 5 distinct areas or rooms.
Consider the following elements and add them to your facility as appropriate:
•
•
•
Facility structure
o Walls
o Doors
o Hallways
o Waiting areas
o Other related structural components
Facility areas (but not equipment or furniture)
o Customer service and amenities
? Reception desk, bathroom, shower, vending machine, etc.
o Patient consultation areas

? Space for laboratory equipment, radiology equipment, gases like oxygen, and
suctions
Do NOT include any equipment, furniture, or other assets. This week and next are focused strictly
on floor plan layout.
Write a 175- to 350-word response to the following prompts:
•
•

Use a standard file format that your instructor will be able to view. Print Screen or scanned images are
also acceptable.
Week Four: Facility Planning—Floor Plan, Part 2
This week you will continue to build your final facility. The legal team has asked you to provide them with
considerations regarding legal and regulatory requirements that may affect the facility planning process.
Make any changes to your drawing needed to meet regulatory considerations, such as:
•
•
•
•
•
Local and state zoning codes for your chosen location
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
Credentialing requirements, such as the Joint Commission
Do not add equipment, furniture, and other assets.
Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper. Your paper should:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Briefly
o Acknowledge structural modifications to your floor plan
o Note assets and equipment you add to your floor plan
Analyze the flow of your project by using the software project planning tool of your choice to
outline the design and construction of your facility, from start to finish. Gantt charts are often
used, but you may choose a tool that works best for you. You will find some good examples at:
https://zapier.com/blog/free-project-management-software/
In light of regulatory considerations:
• Analyze the impact of federal, state, and local legal and regulatory requirements on your
facility
• Analyze accountability and liability requirements for staff and other stakeholders
• Analyze the relationship between legal and ethical considerations of the requirements.
Cite Hayward and at least 3 other credible scholarly references, using proper APA formatting for
citation and reference listing.
Submit your assignment as an APA paper
Submit an updated copy of the floorplan of your facility. Paste it at the end of your essay or
submit a separate file. Use a standard file format that your instructor will be able to view. Print

Week Five: Facility Planning—Floor Plan, Part 3
This week you will consider how your facility impacts the environment and review your facility to consider
any additional changes based on the knowledge you have gained throughout the course.
Add to your drawing:
•
Furniture, equipment, and other assets to your facility as needed for sustainability, patient, staff,
families, and so forth.

Facility Planning
The facility is a hospital floor plan that includes rooms, hallways, reception, registry,
reception room, doctor’s exam rooms, external pharmacy, and optical shop. The room’s size
has been customized according to the urgency and to enable good patient traffic flow. The flow
should be design for minimal contradiction (Hayward, 2016).
The patients upon entering the facility will come through the entry porch and settle in the
waiting area. After a few minutes in the benches, they head to the reception to enquire about

what to do next. The patient might be referred to a doctor exam room or nurse exam room. In
case the patient requires more assessment, the patient will move to the investigation room then,
upon finishing, will pass through external pharmacy while heading out.
The staff also enter through the entry porch and move directly to the registry room to
check in for work. The structure is simple for anyone coming for the first time. The plan is to
make it as easy as possible and ensure that the flow is accurate. Also, the staffs have secure
navigation options all through the hospital (Register et al., 2019).
