Human Protein Atlas Special Project
The Human Protein Atlas is a great data source for learning about where proteins are
expressed at the gross anatomical level down to the subcellular level. As described on their
website: “The Human Protein Atlas is a Swedish-based program initiated in 2003 with the
aim to map all the human proteins in cells, tissues, and organs using an integration of various
omics technologies, including antibody-based imaging, mass spectrometry-based
proteomics, transcriptomics, and systems biology. All the data in the knowledge resource is
open access to allow scientists both in academia and industry to freely access the data for
exploration of the human proteome.”
Much like the RCSB (Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics) hosted at Rutgers
as a data base/consortium on macromolecular structure, the Human Protein Atlas is a
consortium project developed and hosted by several Swedish Universities and supported by
the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation to address structural biology at a meso to gross
anatomy scale. In relation to human genetic diseases, knowledge on the structure of the
protein to its location(s) at the subcellular, cellular, tissue, and organ level can help in
understanding the function of the gene/protein in health and disease. Your task is to utilize
this resource to gain knowledge on a gene/protein of interest to you.
The objectives/requirements for this project are for you to develop a review of a protein
using the Human Protein Data Bank as your resource. The review can be as an annotated
PowerPoint or as a Word document in final submission form.
Select a protein of interest to you. Note that you can type in the protein name but you will
eventually be using the gene name.
Once selected:
1. Use the Summary section/tab to obtain the gene name and information on the the
protein for you to describe its function (a short paragraph is fine).
2. Use the Structure section/tab to:
a) Obtain the alpha-carbon backbone of the structure of the protein.
b) Obtain the location of disease/clinical variants if there are any, if not show
