Form is an important component in music. It is the main organizational force in all the music that you listen to. There are many ways of organizing music.
Strophic is when a single section is basically repeated over and over again. Think of all those videos and recorded music that uses loops to generate a basic “beat’ and essentially uses this strophe through out the entire composition.
Binary is when there are basically two sections of music that are used in varying orders, but mostly with a repeat of the “A” section and then repeats of the “B“ section. Many pop songs use a binary form where there’s a verse and then a chorus and they are repeated over and over.
Ternary implies 3 sections of music. They may be a repeat of the first section of music after the second section, but always are using sections in groups of 3 parts. It might be a pop song that has a verse, chorus, and a bridge with the bridge being the 3rd section.
Your writing/active listening/research project is to pick a song that you love, listen really hard to it and then classify it according to one of these 3 categories. There’s also a 4th category called Through-composed, but I doubt many of you will pick something like that. If you want to research it and investigate it. then by all means DOi
