The effectiveness of the research study depends on the research tools used in the implementation of
various research processes. The quantitative research tools are characterized by a number of factors,
which ensures high quality and standard research outcomes devoid of any form of bias. The first
characteristic and requirement of the quantitative research tools are their validity-this refers to the
strength and certainty with the research conclusions and assumptions along with the propositions can
be deduced as true or false. The validity of the research tool is critical to the research process because it
determines the applicability of the tool in conducting different finds of research exercises (Mohajan,
2017).
The quantitative research tools must be reliable for them to be considered valid for the research
process. The reliability of the research tools refers to the repeatability of the research process using
similar research tools to achieve similar or consistent research outcomes (Mohajan, 2017). If the
research tools used in the study are not repeatable then they do not qualify as appropriate tools for the
study. Another characteristic that quantitative research tools must possess for them to be deemed as
valid for the study process is the systematic process. Research tools must not allow for any haphazard
process to be used in conducting the study (Thyer, 2010). All the procedures have to be based on predetermined order, which allows for the testing and review of every study involved in the research
process.
The validity, and reliability along with the systematic nature of the research tools help in the elimination
of errors and bias, which may compromise the outcome of the research process. Thus, the researchers
must pre-test the various tools within their disposal to determine if they possess these three
characteristics or meet the appropriate requirements before using them in conducting any research
study.

Quantitative research tools
The commonly used research tool in quantitative research surveys. In quantitative surveys, there is the
use of dichotomous questions, multiple choice answers, dropdowns, rank order scale, rating scales,
multiple-choice grid and checklists. Firstly, the dichotomous questions are usually answered with “yes or
no” responses. The multiple questions give the respondents a variety of answers to choose from. For the
multiple answer questions, it vital to include “ others” in case the respondents have a different
experience from the ones indicated. Thirdly, the rank order scaling questions permit a particular group
of brands to be ranked according to specific characteristics. The rating scale question usually requires a
person to rate a product or brand along an evenly spaced continuum. The rating scales are used to
measure the direction and intensity of circumstances. For example, comparative rating scales are used
to describe purchasing experiences on particular websites (Nardi, 2018).
Moreover, the semantic differential scale provides questions to a person in order to rate a product or
company based upon a seven-point rating scale. Unlike the rating scales, the semantic differential scale
doesn’t have a neutral selection. Also, the staple scale usually asks questions to rate a brand or a
product according to particular characteristics on a scale from +5 to -5. Quantitative research also uses
demographic questions especially in identifying characteristics such as age, gender, income, race,
residence, marital status among others. These questions usually aid in determining the target
population which is relevant to the research. In other cases, checklists can be used to gather data in
quantitative research. The checklist can contain a list of characteristics required for the study such as
content, behaviours or abilities (Bernard et al. 2013).
