For this week’s assignment, you will prepare a report for your hospital board members. The report is part of your annual organizational update to the board. As part of this report, you will inform the board of the results of an environmental scan of your competition which revealed an increasing number of out-patient and urgent care facilities within your hospital’s service area. You will recommend to the board, given the nature of reimbursements and its impact on revenue streams, that now is the time to consider diversifying your hospital’s venues to compete with the out-patient market by seeking an alternative to the strictly hospital-based out-patient services being provided. You will provide a rationale on how the out-patient reimbursement model for value-based care would benefit the hospital’s revenue base, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
Your report to the board will include:

An introduction that gives an overview of the current reimbursement structures for your hospital, particularly the Medicare reimbursement structure, bundled payments, fee-for-service, and the move from volume-based to value-based payments.
The next section will inform the board of the findings from the environment scan and local competition.
The last section will be your recommendations to the board to change how your hospital delivers out-patient services. At the end of this section, you will provide a rationale on how the out-patient reimbursement model for value-based care would benefit the hospital’s revenue base, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
