Case Study Rheumatoid Arthritis
Objectives
1. Explain the risk factors, symptoms, etiology, progression, diagnosis, treatment and
prognosis.
2. Demonstrate the ability to access and critically evaluate information from a wide
variety of sources (such as Library databases and internet sources).
Read the case presentation and answer the questions that follow. The Case Study
Rubric will be used to assess your work. The Case Study rubric lists the criteria for each
question (required resources, word counts and citation requirements).
Case Presentation
Jocelyn. is a 48-year old female who presents to your family practice. About six months
ago she noticed that her hands were stiff in the morning. She is a hair stylist and
attributed it to putting in longer hours due to prom season. The stiffness is now lasting
close to noon. She is also having difficulty standing for long periods due to foot and
ankle pain. Jocelyn started taking ibuprofen 800 mg 3 times daily, which initially helped
take the edge off, but its no longer effective for pain or stiffness. She has been feeling
extremely tired. Her shoulders are starting to hurt and its to the point its affecting her
business.
The primary care physician ran some preliminary blood tests. Jocelyns blood tests
revealed positive rheumatoid factor, CCP antibodies, elevated ESR and elevated
C-reactive protein. Jocelyn was informed of the results were likely signs of rheumatoid
arthritis. Her PCP referred her to a Rheumatologist to be seen as soon as possible.

and treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
4. Jocelyn needs to be educated on the treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Explain the
treatment using terms that Jocelyn can understand. At minimum this should include any
at- home-care, over the counter medications, prescriptions (includes physical therapy,
occupational therapy, counseling), alternative or complementary care.
5. Explain the prognosis of the disease to Jocelyn and preventative measures that can
be taken to prevent the disease from worsening.
